Start with the exact plan name

When checking whether a doctor is in-network, use the exact plan name, metal level, network type, and carrier. A doctor may accept one plan from a carrier but not another plan from the same carrier.

Do not rely only on the carrier name. The specific network tied to the specific plan is what matters.

Use more than one verification method

Start with the carrier's provider directory for the plan you are considering. Then consider calling the doctor's office and asking whether they participate in that exact Marketplace plan and network.

When calling, ask about the provider's specific office location and whether new patients are accepted. Provider participation can vary by office location and can change over time.

Check hospitals, specialists, and facilities too

Your primary care doctor is only one part of the network. If certain hospitals, specialists, labs, imaging centers, or urgent care locations matter to you, check those as well.

Some plans may require referrals or have different rules for specialist care. Review the plan documents and network rules before enrolling.

Save proof of what you checked

It can help to save screenshots, confirmation numbers, dates of calls, and the names of people you spoke with. This does not guarantee future participation, but it gives you a record of what you verified before enrolling.

Networks can change, so verification should be done close to enrollment and again before major scheduled care when possible.

Compare Plans Before You Enroll

Check available ACA plans, then review each plan's provider network and details before making a final decision.
